Understanding Goldendoodle Generations
When it comes to Goldendoodles, understanding the different generations can be the key to choosing your dream puppy. There is so much information out there, and I find. most of it to be so basic and unknowledgeable on the actual genetics of doodles. As most know, these lovable hybrids are a mix of Golden Retrievers and Poodles, but the specific combination can vary. Let's break down the three generations we breed at Windsong.
Here, we break down the three main generations - Multigen, F1, and F1b - to help you make an informed decision.
F1 Goldendoodles : The First Generation
The F1 Goldendoodle is a first-generation cross between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle. They exhibit a balanced mix of traits from both parent breeds, making them a popular choice for families. They usually have nice square retriever heads and they ALWAYS have a wavy coat. Because Golden Retrievers have a solid cream, gold or red colored coat, they don’t have the particular coat genetics to produce anything other than a solid or abstract puppy. Our F1 goldendoodles are typically solid colored and standard in size. At Windsong, we don’t breed mini F1’s as we prefer to take a slower approach to sizing down to a smaller dog.
F1b Goldendoodles : Adding a Twist
The F1b Goldendoodle is typically a backcross between an F1 Goldendoodle and a Poodle. However, the “b” just signifies the backcross to the parent breed. So, while this is typically back to a poodle, it can technically be back to a retriever as well. There are so many misconceptions on the F1b goldendoodle! It only takes a simple google search to find this generation praised over and over for being the best generation for individuals with allergies. However, when breeding an F1b goldendoodle you have the genetics from the F1 parent. An F1 goldendoodle is always F/IC. This means they carry for an improper coat. When looking at a concern as complex as allergies, Windsong personally likes to ensure the BEST MATCH by choosing a puppy from a litter where both parents are F/F. This is actually NOT an F1b, but a multigen goldendoodle puppy.
Multigen Goldendoodles : A Blend of Generations
Multigen Goldendoodles, are a fascinating mosaic of genetic diversity born from two Goldendoodle parents. They possess a rich blend of characteristics from their lineage, providing a wide spectrum of coat types and size. Multigens are often praised for having the most “human-like” temperaments of all of the generations. They typically possess a quirky fun and silly personality with human-like eyes and a range of gorgeous soft and thick doodle coats. They are incredibly intelligent and do exceptionally well for therapy and service work. At Windsong, we have tailored our breeding program to produce Multigen’s with almost as much retriever % as a F1. Our goal is produce a well balanced doodle with a nice square head and a balanced muzzle and body structure. Since we have bred out most of the improper coat carriers in our multigen parents, a Windsong Doodle multigen puppy is the premier option for an individual with allergies or sensitivities.
Our multigen goldendoodles at Windsong have been bred carefully over the years to produce unique colors (tuxedos, partis, chocolates and merles) as well as the coveted straight coat. Their individuality is their charm, making them a popular choice among those who appreciate diversity or for our individuals wanting their dog to stand apart from the rest.
